ABOUT US

“Whoever sees me doesn't really know who I am. See the look in my mother's eyes who inherited it from my grandfather. Anyone who sees me sees my father in this way of being that my father inherited from his father, who he inherited from his father, even before he was born.”   Adapted from the lyrics of the song “Quem me ve”, by Luís Trigacheiro

Quinta do Marmeleiro was born from the desire to continue a space that has belonged to the same family for 4 generations.

It is a typical Alentejo hill, whose houses are inserted in a floodplain flanked by a stream. It is a calm space, where silence and close contact with nature prevail.

Here time ceases to take place and all the details acquire meaning, bringing memories of the people who lived here, their habits and ways of life. Whether on a walk, or through the sound of birds, animals grazing, the wind in the trees, everything invites you to slow down and enjoy nature.

The Quinta has about three hectares and three houses, Casa Poejo (T1), Casa Rosmaninho (T1) and Casa Marmeleiro (T2).

Quinta do Marmeleiro has belonged to the same family for 4 generations.

The story tells that a family lived on the farm whose youngest daughter, Maria Luísa, fell in love with a boy, Manuel Henriques, who passed by, coming from Relíquias, and stopped to give his horse a drink from the well. At the time, the road that passed through the farm was the only accessible one to go to the S. Pedro fair, in Cercal. They married and stayed at Quinta do Marmeleiro.  They had 11 children.

The activity at Quinta do Marmeleiro was essentially agricultural, both for the use of the house and for selling. There was a lot of variety and quantity of nuts, olives with which they made oil, vegetables and honey.

One of the granddaughters who used to go with her grandfather Manuel Henriques, on his trips selling products from hill to hill, fell in love with one of the sons of a family who lived on a hill in Sines and they got married. It was this couple who recovered the Quinta many years later and one of their daughters is the current owner.
